Merry Christmas

Life has been very hectic this Christmas season.  Lots of events and since the launch of my new website, internet orders have been coming in thick and fast.

However, I'm pleased to say that all orders are now posted and I'm hanging up my glass cutter for some time.  Two weeks in fact!  Never been away for that long before.

Wishing all my customers and friends a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.  I'll leave you with this snowy photo of a local road in Moray.

Personalised Coasters for Christmas

I have a new range of coasters - these are themed personalised coasters and will make great Christmas gifts.  I think the chickens are my favourite!

I had a few to test the water when I was exhibiting at the Crafts for Christmas event in Glasgow and they almost sold out - so very popular!

I will be making the following themed coasters - fishing, gardening, baking, cats, dogs, chickens and patchwork owls. Something for everyone.  I have a few more going in the kiln tomorrow, so they will be added to the website thereafter.  Priced at £10 each.

What do you think?

Pop-up Craft Fair, St Giles Centre, Elgin

The Speyside Artisans have taken over an empty shop unit within the St Giles Centre, Elgin and transformed it into a Art and Craft Shop.  It is a great space, bright and light and good for displaying our wonderful work.

The above work is that of George MacKenzie, a very talented local ceramicist.
His work is spectacular.

There really is something for everyone - soft furnishings; lampshades and cushions, restored furniture, photography, fused glass gifts, kiltmaking, Integlio Printing, jewellery, felting, pottery and not forgetting locally made Scottish tablet!!  I did say there was something for everyone!!

Lesley Boyd has her small printing press on display too so she can explain the printing process she creates.  Her work is wonderful and so very different from other printing processes.

We will be in the unit (ground floor, next to Subway) until Sunday 14th, so only two days left.

Whisky Coasters

These are the new whisky coasters added to my website - I'm really pleased with them and just sent a set off to a customer.

These would make christmas gifts, especially for men!  People often have so much difficulty in finding an ideal present for a man - look no further.

You can buy these coasters from my website.

Open Studios - Chainsaw Carvings

Besides being open displaying my glass goodies, I have a local chainsaw carver showing his work - Garry Shand.  I have followed his work for some time now and just love his natural creations.  He recently appeared at the Carve Carrbridge, near Aviemore where carvers from all over the world come to carve in front of hundreds of people to win the annual award.
 Love the Hare above.
I think it's these two little creatures that people love the most - Sheep and Highland Coo.  Aren't they the cutest?  They are ideal for indoor or outdoor use.

All these are available at Lazy HQ during Open Studios.

North East Open Studios

I cannot believe it has been a year since the last one!  Once again, I will be opening my studio to the public from tomorrow 15th September - Sunday 23rd September, 10am - 4pm.

Last year I had a good response from local people and had a good number of visitors.  But this year, I'm hoping to increase on that number, plus I've had two good newspaper articles (see above).  This one was printed in the Northern Scot today.

Also, new to Lazy HQ, I've had a studio extension -
I'm so pleased with it, it's basically a posh shed!  But it does the trick.  I've yet to fill all the space with handcrafted goodiness!  But I have put so much effort in to this new project, it's been really exciting and very happy with it.

Beach Hut Suncatchers

These are my latest summer designs - what do you think?   I thought with the 'lack of summer' we could do with some colour in our lives!

Beach Huts are always a popular design and think they team up well with the lighthouses too.  The designs have been screenprinted and are available as window hangers.

Whisky Themed Glass Gifts

Introducing my new Whisky themed products.  These have been screen printed with whisky text relating to the whisky process and distilleries in and around Scotland.  The Whisky range will consist of a glass platter, as seen above, coasters, dishes and bowl.

You can see the dish and coaster above.

I think these make perfect gifts for the 'man who has everything' and you will not find these on the high street.  I originally created them for the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival that took place this year in Dufftown, and received such a good response I thought I would add them to my range of glass gifts.

These items are very unique and may differ in layout from that in the photo.  This is because I create silk screens to adapt to my products and I do vary the wording for each batch.

Do you like my new range?

Enjoying Turbine Walk

I recently had a trip out delivering some glass work for an exhibition and took advantage of the fine weather.  We dropped in to the Boyndie Visitor Centre near Banff where we had a light lunch, then headed outside to the gardens.  There was a notice 'Turbine Walk' so followed by path and walked up close and personal with the huge wind turbines.

As you can see the pathway was covered with this yellow gorse and the air distinctively smelt of coconut from the flowers.  It was like taking a trip through a Caribbean island!

Even my daughter was enjoying herself out in the fresh air! (and eating her lolly)

Not wanting to start a political/environmental debate here, but I think these giant structures are quite graceful.  Coming from Cornwall, we have lived with these structures for many years and have always been captivated by them.

It was a very pleasant day away from work and the studio (something that does not happen often)!

Speyside Whisky Festival - New Designs

I recently had the opportunity of attending the Visit Scotland Tourism Expo in Edinburgh, representing Creative Scotland and showcasing my glass.  It was a great opportunity and met some lovely people.  I also launched this Whisky themed glass at the Expo and will also be showing it during the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival next weekend.  As you can see from above, I made a large bowl, platter (below), coasters and dishes.
The Whisky themed glass is all based on Speyside whisky distilleries and process words.  I even had a local distillery see my pieces and have now placed an order for selling in their Visitor Centre.
I will make bespoke sets of coasters for the Distillery by adding their company name and the whisky process words on to the coasters.  These are all screen printed - still enjoying the process!

I am taking orders for the Whisky glass.

FSB Meeting at Moray Art Centre

I attended my first Federation of Small Businesses meeting last week.  We had our meeting at the well known Moray Art Centre at Findhorn and the topic of discussion was Tourism within Moray.  It was a great meeting and met some good contacts.  The Art Centre put on a fantastic spread too.

After the meeting we were all treated to a creative session, given by Randy Klinger, Centre Director.  We all had so much fun.  We were all given long canes, with chalks attached to draw on the paper on the floor.  A person then danced and flowed around the room - we had to draw her movement. Amazingly everyone embraced the creative workshop (mind you not all understood it!)

We then had to walk around the room, viewing each art piece and saying what we thought.  It was truly enlightening!

I came away from the meeting on a high and feeling happy.  Goes to show that being creative can lift the spirits. Although Randy was an excellent teacher!!

If you ever get a chance to visit the Moray Art Centre, they have some wonderful exhibtion that take place in their Centre.

Where has Spring Gone?

Last week was a heatwave, and this week..............SNOW!!!!  It certainly took me by surprise, waking up to this scene (above) from our bedroom window. Of course, our daughter was in her element and wouldn't stop going on about playing out in the snow.  The two of us spent the morning in the garden, building snowmen (and woman) and going for a walk in the village.

We live in a beautiful area, and when it snows it just looks so pretty.  The roads are very good too as we have plenty of gritters to clear the roads, so we are not housebound.

I will now have to put my short away for a little while longer me thinks!!

Listening to the News today on the tv, a hosepipe ban in certain areas - whatever next!

Hummingbirds Curve Sculpture - Screen Printing

The Hummingbirds Panel has now been turned in to this curved sculpture.  It is such a beautiful colour and love the naturally occurring bubbles within the piece.  Another  piece I have made is the blue dish below -
The dandelion clock is not a new design, but have not made the dish before.  I'm really pleased wit how it turned out and really like the turquoise colour, which is a different glass from the one used above.

I will be adding them to my website later.

Hummingbirds - New Screen Printed Designs

I've had a productive week this week and have been enjoying more screen printing.  The Hummingbirds panel above is one of my latest creations - perfectly fused on to this lovely turquoise glass.  The panel is now in the kiln again to slump in to a freestanding curve, a mini sculpture.

The second piece is this bright red window hanger:
The weather has been so great lately, I've had lots of inspiration for birds!  Must be the spring air!

What do you think of my new designs?

Friday 23 March 2012

I have decided to run fused glass workshops as an addition to my business.  The first one starts on 31 March, 10am - 4pm, which is next weekend.  No one in Moray is currently working with fused glass or offering workshops, and many people ask whether I teach fused glass.

I have put it off for many months, due in part being so busy with looking after my daughter (she's 4) and running the business.  But now it is a quieter time of year, I thought I would plan a schedule for the workshop and get things in motion.

I you live in/around Moray and interested in learning a new skill, please let me know.  I only have two places left, and booking is essential.

Spring has Sprung!

I think I'm rather late in posting this, as it seems Spring has been here for some time here in NE Scotland.  Such a mild season.

However, these pretty little delicate creatures have been finding it difficult to hibernate.  I have had to feed a few of them as they kept waking mid season.  I have been quite worried about them, so had to do some internet research to find out what to do when they wake too early.  So, I fed them sugary water and put them in to boxes.

They are now waking and have released six to the outside world lately.  These Tortoiseshell butterflies are so colourful. It wouldn't surprise me if there were fewer of them this spring/summer, due to the mild weather we have been having.  If they wake too early, they use too much of their food store for energy.

MFR Cash For Kids - How Much?

I'm thrilled to announce that Moray Firth Radio raised a staggering £32,300 at the weekend during their on air Cash for Kids Auction.  A magnificent amount!

It's a great charity as all the money gets spent on local kids, these are just some of the things the money is used for:
*  Clothing for a 15 year old girl who looks after her mother and her 3 siblings. Her mother had previous battled substance misuse and is now struggling to get her life back on track.
*  We purchased a specially adapted bicycle for a young girl who has Myotonic Dystrophy, learning difficulties and is autistic. As a result she is unable to walk without a walking aid and has communication problems. She is currently living with a foster family and making great progress. The bicycle we bought her will allow her to join in with family cycles and enjoy playing outdoors with her friends.
*  We funded a residential ski break for a 10 year boy with Down’s Syndrome. Despite being in a mainstream school he requires constant supervision. He has already worked very hard to achieve all his goals and going on this ski team is another milestone for this young man. MFR Cash for Kids were able to make this happen.

I'm glad Lazy Daisy Glass was able to help in a small way!

MFR Cash for Kids On Air Auction

It's that time of the year when Moray Firth Radio (MFR) have their on air auction in aid for Cash for Kids.  The auction take place all weekend and is going on as I write this.

It is a special auction as all money raised stays within the MFR area (Inverness, Grampian and Highlands).  They do of course raise money throughout the year, but this on air auction raises an exceptional amount of money.  The link here tells you all about what magnificent work they do.

This year, Lazy Daisy Glass has donated a couple of prizes to the auction - £85 voucher for one place on a fused glass workshop taking place on 31 March 2012 and £35 voucher to be spent online at Lazy Daisy Glass.  The voucher to be spent on line could get you something like these -
 Sunset Meadow Mini Sculpture (above)
Lavender Lattice Coasters (above)

It really is a fantastic cause and wish MFR all the best of luck with their auction.  I will be phoning them later to bid on an item too.

Etsy and Treasuries

As part of my new marketing strategy, I have re-opened my shop on Etsy and added some of my new screen printed designs.  I first joined Etsy back in 2008, but spent no time trawling the forums and didn't really pay any attention to my shop - hence very little sales!

New year - fresh ideas and with over 8 million items for sale and 1.2 billion page views, it really is a global shopping experience.  The statistics are amazing - check their latest December's Weather Report,

Apart from my new items in the shop, I have been taking part in the forums (getting myself known, as well as my products) and joined in one of the recent BNR Treasuries.  I still don't know what BNR stands for, but it was fun taking part.  I had to 'Buy in' to the Treasury to have my shop featured, people are then able to purchase from your shop.  It's like taking centre stage at the theatre!

I bought a few items, starting the with Alice in Wonderland Pendant above - purchased from Wishes on the Wind.  It's a lovely pendant made from a scrabble tile and have been wearing it today.

My second purchase from Twink Knits - crochet mug cosy (below). Again, have been using it today.

I have had a few sales over the weekend and been in TWO treasuries - also a first!

It just goes to show that taking part in the community does pay off.

If you have an Etsy shop, please feel free to include your details in the comments below.  What do you think of Etsy??  Please share your experiences.

UK Designers Fit for a Queen - Madonna

Never one to big up Madonna, after all she doesn't really need it! But, after all the hype from the weekend I decided to watch the Super Bowl half time show. And show it certainly was! A great performance by the Queen of Pop, Madonna, but was also in awe of the stage set. After some internet research, I found that UK designers were commissioned to make part of her set. The designers, Jimmie Martin, are based in Kensington, London and make some wonderfully quirky products from chairs, beds, cabinets to cushions:
It is great to see a pop icon using UK designers who's main business is to transform old pieces of furniture in to unique items with their urban style.
Not only are Jimmie Martin edgy designers, they are British! And I'm all for supporting UK designers/makers - Buy British!!
